Reared to become wild-like: addressing behavioral and cognitive deficits in cultured aquatic animals destined for stocking into natural environments—a critical review

چکیده
Hatchery-reared aquatic animals tend to perform worse in natural environments than wild conspecifics. This was pointed out over a century ago and while there are many possible causes, one persistent observation is that unnatural rearing cause behavioral expressions unsuitable for life the wild. Behavioral traits being adaptive barren, food-rich, predator-free hatchery tanks likely differ from those nature. More recently, suspicions of cognitive deficiencies due sensory deprivation have also been raised. Over last few decades, substantial research has devoted produce more wild-like phenotypes reared stocking. includes life- skills training programs, where learn cope with important features environment (e. g., live food predation risk), environmental modifications aimed at stimulating formation adequate enrichment reduction number individuals per tank). The main purpose this paper provide summary current state-of-knowledge interventions ameliorating Furthermore, it aims foundation assist development future questions, hypotheses, experiments eventually improve postrelease performance these animals.

Scale stocking checks to differentiate between hatchery-reared and wild mulloway Argyrosomus japonicus
Scales from hatchery-reared, stocked and wild mulloway Argyrosomus japonicus (Temminck and Schlegel) captured in the Georges River, and a library of mulloway scales from coastal New South Wales, were examined for the presence of scale checks. Checks specific for hatchery-reared fish were present in 100% of recaptured hatchery-reared mulloway; the origin of which was confirmed by the presence of...
متن کاملThe application of risk and disease modelling to emerging freshwater diseases in wild aquatic animals
1. Emerging diseases pose significant ecological and economic threats in fresh waters. Both risk assessment and mathematical modelling have potential to improve our understanding of the uncertainties associated with emerging disease events and make informed predictions about their likely impact. 2. We review the different methodologies that may be used to estimate the likely geographic spread a...

Integrated Psychological Therapy (IPT) is a structured intervention program that prescribes steps to remediate cognitive and behavioral dysfunctions that are characteristic of the psychopathology of schizophrenia. Evaluative studies of IPT indicated that the program improved schizophrenic patients' elementary cognitive processes such as attention, abstraction, and concept formation but that pat...
متن کاملMefenamic Acid Attenuates Intracerebroventricular Streptozotocin-Induced Cognitive Deficits in the Rat: A Behavioral Analysis
Intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of streptozotocin (STZ) in rats is followed by long-term and progressive deficits in learning, memory, and cognitive performance which is somewhat similar to sporadic Alzheimer’s disease (SAD). Epidemiological studies suggest that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) could delay or slow the clinical expression of SAD. Therefore, the benefi...
